How to Activate Windows XP Home SP2

Windows XP Home Edition is a popular operating system option for individuals who need a basic user-friendly OS on their computer. Service Pack 2 for Windows XP offered a number of tweaks and security features for users of Windows XP, making it more stable and secure than either the base version of the OS or Service Pack 1. If you are installing Windows XP Home with SP2, you will have to activate your version of Windows in order to ensure that you have a genuine Windows XP product key; activation is easy, however, and can be accomplished in a matter of moments either online or over the phone.

Instructions

  1. Activate During Installation

    • 1

Install Windows XP Home with Service Pack 2, entering your product key when prompted to do so. You will be given the option to either activate your copy of Windows XP Home as part of the installation process or to activate it later. Choose to activate now.

    • 2

Select the type of activation that you wish to use. Internet activation is fastest and requires no interaction from you; phone activation requires you to call a phone number provided for you and enter an activation code that you receive. Modem activation is offered as well, allowing a dial-up modem to activate your copy of Windows XP Home with Service Pack 2 using your phone line even if you don't have an always-on Internet connection (this is accomplished using the same method as online activation).

    • 3

Wait while Windows XP Home contacts the activation server if you choose online activation. The process should only take a minute or two, after which your copy of Windows XP Home with Service Pack 2 will be activated. You will also be given the option to register your copy of Windows, though this is optional.

    • 4

Call the number provided for you by the installation program if you choose to activate by phone. You will be given an activation request number by the software, which you will need to give to a customer service representative when asked. They will in turn give you an activation code that you can enter into the appropriate boxes on your activation screen; when the activation code is accepted, your copy of Windows will be activated.

    • 5

Click the "OK" button when you are told that "You have successfully activated your copy of Windows" and complete your OS installation.

    Activate After Installation

    • 6

Press the "Start" button, open the "All Programs" menu and then open the "Accessories" folder. Open the "System Tools" folder, and then select "Activate Windows."

    • 7

Choose the type of activation that you wish to use in order to activate your copy of Windows. You will have the same options available to you as you would if you had chosen to activate your copy of Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2 during installation. You can activate over the Internet or by phone.

Wait while your copy of Windows is activated if you choose online activation. Call the Windows customer service number provided for you if you choose to activate over the phone, providing the customer service representative with the activation code given to you by your operating system when asked.

Click "OK" when the message appears telling you that your copy of Windows has been activated successfully.
