How To Prepare Bread Pakora

Bread pakora is a fried bread popular in Punjab, often served with green chutney and tomato sauce. Spicy and delicious, this is not the snack food for dieters but the taste makes up for the calories. Bread pakora is as easy to make as it is delicious to eat. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 4 to 5 bread slices
  • 1 cup gram flour (besan)
  • 1/4 tsp. turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp. ajwain
  • Red chili powder to taste
  • 1/4 tsp. garam masala powder
  • Water
  • Frying oil

Instructions

      Cut the bread pieces into shapes. Triangles are traditional but you can cut anything you'd like from hearts to squares to dinosaurs.

      Combine the dry ingredients in a bowl.

      Add water to the dry ingredients until the batter is smooth. You don't want lumps but the batter shouldn't be too watery.

      Heat oil in a pan for frying the battered bread.

      Dip each piece of bread in the batter then add to the oil to fry until crisp. Place the finished bread pakora on a paper towel to drain. They are best served hot.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ajwain is a spice similar in aroma and taste to thyme. You may be able to find it in a supermarket but more likely you'll have to order it online or from a specialty spice store. Garam masala is a spice blend used in Indian cooking, which can be found in most supermarkets.

  • Whenever frying, grease fires are possible. Remember never to try to put out grease fire with water. Always have a fire extinguisher on hand.
