How to Remove Service.exe

Service.exe is a process component of several Trojan horses. Primarily distributed via peer-to-peer networks and ActiveX components on websites, its main purpose is to download and install additional malware to the infected computer. Prior to doing so, it disables those parts of the computer that are needed to remove such malware. The file also communicates logged information to the remote host server. Service.exe is also a legitimate process file for software belonging to the Dell Solution Center related to stable, secure system performance, as well as Adaptec SCSI cards. Neither of the latter files should be terminated unless they are causing system problems.

Instructions

    • 1

Back up the Windows registry prior to beginning the virus removal process, because the registry stores extensive information about how your computer operates and removal requires extensive changes to it via the registry editor. See the Resource section below for complete instructions on registry backup.

    • 2

Turn off System Restore if the operating system of the infected computer is operating with either Windows ME or Windows XP. See the Resource section below for complete instructions on turning off System Restore.

    • 3

Restart the computer in safe mode and log in as an administrator. Press "F8" after the first beep occurs during start up, before the display of the Microsoft Windows logo. Select the first option, to run "Windows in Safe Mode" from the selection menu.

    • 4

Remove any program files from the computer if you are sure they are related to the Trojan horse version of the service.exe file. Go to "Start," "Control Panel," "Add/Remove Programs." Remove any programs referencing "service.exe." If none are listed, continue to Step 5. The malware program does contain hidden files that may not be deleted as part of the software removal process. In this case, it is likely that the program will reappear upon reboot. Continue to follow the steps below completely to avoid reinstallation.

    • 5

Use the Windows Search tool to determine if "service.exe" exists on the hard drive. Go to "Start," "Search," "All Files and Folders." Type "service.exe" in the "All or Part of the File Name" section. Select "All Local Hard Drives" from the "Look in:" drop-down list for the best results. Click "Search."

    • 6

Use the Windows Task Manager to end any service.exe processes that are running. Press "Ctrl+Alt+Del" to open Task Manager. Select the "Processes" tab, select "service.exe" and "End Process." Close the Task Manager.

    • 7

Click on "Start," "Run," type "msconfig" and press "Enter." Remove check marks next to any "service.exe" entries on the "Startup" tab. Save changes and exit to the desktop.

    • 8

Click on "Start," "Run," type "regedit" and press "Enter." Press "Ctrl+F," type "service.exe" in the search field and delete all related entries. Exit the registry.

    • 9

Click on "Start," "Run," type "cmd" and press "Enter" to access the command prompt and unprotect any files that need to be deleted. Type "cd" and press the space bar. Then type "\windows\system" to access the directory where the virus files reside. From the command prompt, type "attrib -a -s -h -r service.exe". Type "exit" from the command prompt and press "Enter" to return to the desktop operating system.

    • 10

Use the Windows Search tool to locate and remove all temp files. Go to "Start," "Search," "All Files and Folders." Type "*.tmp" in the "All or Part of the File Name" section. Select "All Local Hard Drives" from the "Look in:" drop-down list for the best results. Click "Search." Right-click on each temp file and select "Delete" from the shortcut menu. Repeat this process for "service.exe".

    • 11

      Reboot the PC normally.

    • 12

Repeat the above steps or try using a free automatic removal program from Trend Micro or AVG (see Reference section below) if the Trojan still resides on the computer. System Restore may be reactivated if the malware has been successfully removed (see the Resource section below for complete instructions).

Tips & Warnings

  • Manual removal of service.exe may be difficult, as the removal process requires knowledge of the operating system command prompt and registry editor. In addition, different versions of this malware rename and relocate various file components, and multiple processes may be running simultaneously. If not performed properly, the computer system may experience permanent damage. Consequently, manual removal might be best for experienced users. Less experienced users might want to consider using an automatic virus removal application such as that offered by Trend Micro or AVG.
