Get those fleas fleeing!
Get those fleas fleeing!

A lot of health-conscious clients have asked me over the years, is there any natural remedy to prevent fleas that actually works? The hopeful answer is YES! Here are the ways I've kept my 2 cats and 1 dog flea-free for the past four years living in hot, flea lovin' Southern California.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Flea comb
  • Flea shampoo
  • Flea spray or powder
  1. Step 1

Bathe weekly. My cats don't like baths, so I just bathe my dog in a natural flea shampoo like Ark Natural's Neem once a week. I also like EarthBath shampoos that don't remove flea spot control.

  2. Step 2

Use Regular Preventative Treatment. I use Natural Defense flea collars and spray on my cats and spot treatment and spray on my dog. If the spot treatment runs out (usually after 2 weeks or so) I've found the spray alone combined with weekly baths is enough.

  3. Step 3

Give Garlic Treats at least three times a week. Garlic and brewer's yeast treats help keep the fleas away. They hate the taste.

  4. Step 4

Keep A Close Eye. If your pet is scratching and you suspect there's a flea, use a flea comb. Give them a bath as soon as possible to flush the flea down the drain, and bring some cooling relief to any bites.

  5. Step 5

Diet Matters. I have seen an incredible difference with flea prevention between the animals I have kept on organic diets compared to the many pets in the past who ate non-organic food and tap water. I firmly believe that an organic diet and filtered water has supported my flea-free pets.

  6. Step 6

If you've had a flea invasion in your home, try Only Natural's All-In-One Flea Remedy. It's an all natural powder that shreds fleas to pieces. The powder can be used on floors, carpets, furniture, pet beds and even the pets themselves. I used it years ago for a bad flea invasion I had when I first moved to California and after trying lots of other products, this one actually did the job.

Tips & Warnings
  • Vacuum daily to help prevent fleas from breeding in your home.
  • Flea droppings look like black flecks of dirt. Look for it in bedding - it's a sign you need to take action.
  • Keep up on the laundry. Make sure you wash bedding, both yours and your pets, regularly so there's not a lot of stagnant time for fleas to nest.
  • Some studies have shown that fleas like the taste of "dirty" blood. Make sure you feed your pet organic food and distilled water to keep them healthy, their immunity strong and the fleas away!
  • Some animals are allergic to fleas. If your pet has signs of an allergy, such as inflammation, see your vet.
  • Fleas are parasites and can carry diseases. If your pet has been bitten up, bring him/her in for a check-up and relevant tests.
  • Pesticides used in synthetic flea control are poison and over long periods of time may affect an animal's health.
  • When I asked a vet how long she thought these pesticide products would continue working she said maybe another 40 years before the fleas become immune - another reason to search for natural methods!
