Unless your teen has a learning permit that allows them to drive without insurance with an adult who does have car insurance, your teen's going to need car insurance when they drive. When you call your insurance company, you might be shocked at the rates. Here are some things you can do to lower the cost.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check your state's DMV to see if the teen even needs car insurance. Some states allow teen drivers to be uninsured while they have their learning permits.

  2. Step 2

It's not always cheaper to add your teen to your own car insurance policy. Use one of the online car insurance rate checkers to see if you can find a better deal.

  3. Step 3

Some car insurance companies offer lower premiums to teens who have good grades (3.0 GPA or higher) and also teens who have passed a safe driving course. You can find accredited safe driving courses online or through your state DMV.
