Make Cheap Dishwasher Detergent

Sushi, single-malt Scotch, eye surgery... there are some things worth paying top dollar for, but dishwasher detergent isn't one of them. You can make your own dishwasher detergent at home for just pennies per wash using natural, eco-friendly ingredients.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • baking soda
  • borax powder
  • liquid dish washing soap (optional)
  • white vinegar (optional)
  1. Step 1

Mix equal parts of baking soda and borax powder. Stir or shake well to combine thoroughly, and store in an air-tight container. Make sure you label it clearly, since it could easily be confused, at a glance, with salt, sugar, or plain baking soda. Although both ingredients are natural, you certainly wouldn't want to eat borax.

  2. Step 2

Put 2 tablespoons of the mixture into the dishwasher detergent compartment for each load. If you like, you can add 1-3 drops - just DROPS - of liquid dish washing soap to the mixture before closing the compartment. Do not add more than 3 literal drops or you'll have suds all over your kitchen floor.

  3. Step 3

Although the simple baking soda/borax mix will clean your dishes, you can also try adding white vinegar to the rinse cycle to help your dishes rinse more cleanly. If you do add vinegar to the cycle, your dishwasher should be clean and odor free day after day.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can substitute washing powder for the borax, but it tends to be harder to find in some areas.

on 7/19/2009 Great idea, and I hope to remember this when I go to use the dishwasher and find that we are out of the liquid normally used.
