Learn how easy it is to check the status of your California state tax return.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The State of California Franchise Tax Board has set up a website where you can check the status of your California state tax refund for free. (A link to the website is provided under Resources below.)

  2. Step 2

In order to check your California personal income tax refund status, you will need to provide the following information: (1) Your Social Security Number; (2) Your mailing address; and (3) Your exact tax refund amount.

  3. Step 3

If you do not have access to the internet or do not feel comfortable using the internet, you can call the California Franchise Tax Board directly for your tax refund status at 1-800-852-5711. Once connection, select Personal Income Tax, and then select option 6 to speak to a representative. You can speak to a representative during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, except on holidays.

  4. Step 4

California state tax refunds for the years 2008 and 2009 may be delayed due to the State of California's budget shortfall.
