Sometimes you might hear a song on the radio, or while randomly searching YouTube and you wander "What is this song referring to? Does it have a meaning?" Chances are, yes it does have a meaning. That song is written from a person just like you, with feelings and emotions, with troubles, hope, love and other things that can inspire you to write a song.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Song
  • Its Lyrics
  • Google or some other medium of searching information
  1. Step 1

Listen to the whole song. Sometimes the song explains the message at the end. Listen carefully to the melody. Its mood might very well show you what the song is about. Chances are if it sounds sad, it is a sad song. If it seems to fill you with hope then it's meant to be a cheery song.

  2. Step 2

Read the lyrics. They can be a real "give-me" for some songs.

  3. Step 3

Know who is behind the song. This does not mean only the singer, but the composer and writer as well. Look us who they are, what lives they lived, what activities they were engaged in. In other words get the story behind the production of the song.

  4. Step 4

Sometimes there is not certain meaning to one song. It can represent a different feeling in different people. This is the beauty of art. Go with what you feel. Does the song remind you of the person you love? Does it remind you of your childhood? Does it seem to be an accurate reflection of you feel at the moment?

Tips & Warnings
  • Use your imagination. Sometimes the lyrics are not very direct, but just like in books you have to really think about what else something can stand for. Look for these metaphors in songs and you will have an easier time understanding it.
