Things You'll Need:
- 3 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup milk
- 4 tbsp butter/margarine
- 2 tbsp flour
- sprinkle pepper
-
Step 1
Grate the cheese. The ingredients I've listed are for a fairly small batch of cheese sauce. For a larger batch you may wish to double/triple the recipe.
-
Step 2
Melt the butter in a frying pan over medium-high heat. On a gas stove, you may wish to set the heat to medium.
-
Step 3
Stir the flour into the melted butter to make a roux. This means to mix the flour into the butter until it is a moistened paste.
-
Step 4
Stir the milk into the roux. Bring it to a boil.
-
Step 5
Add the shredded cheese. Stir the mixture until it is well blended and all the cheese is melted. At this point you can operate for taste. More or less cheese can be added, depending on how you like your cheese sauce. If you add too much cheese, you can always add more milk to thin the sauce. Add any seasonings, salt, pepper you want to add at this point.
Turn off the heat, remove the sauce from the heat, and it is ready.
