Things You'll Need:
- Ironing board
- Talcum powder
- Paper towels
- Iron
-
Step 1
Remove the tie and treat the stain as soon as possible. The longer the stain is allowed the sit on the silk, the greater the chances that it will not come out completely.
-
Step 2
Lay the tie on an ironing board.
-
Step 3
Sprinkle talcum powder or cornstarch directly onto the oil stain. The powdery substance will soak up the oil without damaging your material. Allow the powder to remain on the tie for about 20 to 30 minutes, or longer for a severe stain.
-
Step 4
Tear off two sheets of paper towel. Place one sheet of the paper towel directly onto the ironing board. Turn the silk tie face down on top of the paper towel. Leave the powder on the tie when turning it face down. Place the second paper towel on top of the tie.
-
Step 5
Turn your iron to low heat, or the "Silk" setting. Make sure that the steam is not on, as it will damage your material.
-
Step 6
Place the iron on top of the paper towel that is covering your tie. The heat from the iron will loosen the oil so that more can be soaked up by the powder. Periodically check to see if the stain has been removed.
-
Step 7
Wipe the excess powder from your tie with a dry cloth after you have removed the stain.
