A legal name change can be a lengthy process; furthermore, the woman who decides to take on her husband's last name will soon realize that many changes are necessary. Sometimes, unforeseen costs and small inconveniences arise. In the long run, however, a woman may see it as more beneficial -- both monetarily and domestically -- to take on her husband's name as her own.

    Social Security

  1. Step 1

Begin by obtaining a SS-5 Form from the Social Security Administration. Your closest Social Security office can be determined by entering your zip code on the link below under "Resources"

  2. Step 2

Submit your SS-5 Form, proof of marriage and original marriage license. You can do this by mail or in person.

  3. Step 3

You will be given the option to keep your current middle name, or to legally change it to your maiden name. In either case, your preference will appear on all legal documents from this point forward.

  4. Step 4

Bring your new Social Security card to your employer so that all legal work -- including insurance and retirement benefits -- may be correctly altered.

  5. Step 5

Now that your Social Security information has been changed, you will also need to reapply for a new driver's license and updated car insurance. Take your Social Security information and proof of identification to the department of motor vehicles to obtain these documents.

  6. Step 6

Apply for a new passport by downloading Form DS-19 at the link below under "Resources." The U.S. Department of State will require that you supply proper forms of identification, including your new Social Security information.

  7. Step 7

Call all credit card companies with which you hold an account. You will need to update them on your recent name changes. Some will require more proof than others and may charge a fee.

  8. Step 8

Any investment firms, banks, residence entitlements and utility companies that you are involved with will need to be notified of your name change as well.

Tips & Warnings
  • As you receive mail, take note of those addressed to your maiden name. By doing so, you will be able to determine who you need to inform next.
  • Acquiring some changed documentation sometimes requires paying a fee. Do not give out your Social Security information unless it is absolutely necessary and you are sure that your information is secure.
