Tax time can be a challenge for many people. Some wonder how much money they will be getting back, while others worry about owning a substantial amount of cash. While you can pay a CPA to do your taxes for you, it is actually quite simple to prepare and file your own taxes using software that you can find online. You will need to have access to some basic information (W-2s, social security numbers, write-offs, etc.) before you begin.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Turbo Tax software
  • W-2
  • Family information (birth dates, social security numbers, etc.)
  • Financial statements for interest income, charitable donations, etc.
  • Bank account information or credit card
  1. Step 1

Visit Turbo Tax and choose which edition you would like to use (see Resources). Depending on your income, filing status and other criteria, you may be able to use a free edition.

  2. Step 2

Click on "create an account," read the user agreement and fill out the appropriate information.

  3. Step 3

Fill out the information as you are asked for it. You will need to supply information on each individual in your house (SSN, birth dates, income, deductions, investments, business expenditures, etc.).

  4. Step 4

Choose how you would like to have your taxes filed. You can choose to e-file (over the Internet) or mail your taxes.

  5. Step 5

Choose whether you would like your refund mailed to you via check or deposited into your bank account. If you owe money, you can pay by credit card or electronic check. You can also set up a payment schedule, if needed.

  6. Step 6

Review your taxes to make sure that everything is correct.

  7. Step 7

Accept your payment option and click "file." Turbo Tax will automatically deduct any money that you owe them from your refund or you can pay by credit card.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to print out a copy of your return and keep it for your records.
  • It is illegal to lie or cheat on your taxes. Doing so can result in a large fine and possible imprisonment.
