How to Find My Primary DNS

Each time you connect to the Internet, your computer communicates with at least one domain name system server. DNS servers help your computer resolve the URLs you enter into your Web browser into the numeric IP addresses that those sites are actually located at. You can find your primary DNS in Windows 7 using a tool called IPCONFIG.EXE.

Instructions

    • 1

Press and hold the Windows key and the "R" key on your keyboard at the same time.

    • 2

Type "cmd" into the box that pops up and hit the "Enter" key on your keyboard.

    • 3

Type "ipconfig /all," without quotation marks, into the command prompt window and press "Enter" to bring up a list of all your Internet connection information.

    • 4

Scroll through the results until you see the "DNS Servers" section. The first address listed is your primary DNS server.
