Ice on windshield wipers

In certain parts of the country, snow and ice wreak havoc. Doors frozen shut and windshields frozen solid are difficult to ignore. Windshield wipers are for rain and the occasional sleet or hail; however, they do not remove ice from windows effectively. The wipers even become frozen in place. Before using your vehicle, the windows must be clear of ice and the wipers need to be in proper working order. If you do not removing ice from windshield wipers, the wiper motor could become damaged.

Instructions

    • 1

Scrape the edge of the windshield and the wiper. If the wiper is stuck onto the windshield, lift it gently. Use the side of the scraper and eliminate any ice around the wiper.

    • 2

Gently pull the wiper up to a standing position, if applicable--some wipers cannot hold this position. Scrape underneath while pulling upward to loosen the ice. Complete steps 1 and 2 for the second windshield wiper as well.

    • 3

Use the ice scraper to take off the remaining ice particles on the wipers. Graze the rubber sides as well as the bottom. Clean any remaining ice off the windshield.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never pour water on an icy windshield or wipers. Water will refreeze in cold weather. In addition, the window or wipers can crack.
