Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Line your sink with a clean dishtowel or use a plastic tub to prevent delicate glassware from chipping on hard surfaces.

  2. Step 2

Pick up glassware with two hands, and never by delicate stems or handles.

  3. Step 3

Wash glassware one piece at a time to prevent chipping or cracking. Glass is a hard surface and coming in contact with other glassware can damage your antiques.

  4. Step 4

Use a soft cloth to wash each glass with lukewarm water and a mild detergent Very hot or very cold water could damage delicate glass.

  5. Step 5

Rinse well. Add a couple tablespoons of white vinegar to the rinse water to clear away any residual soap film. Rinse a final time with clear water, as vinegar left on the surface of glass will damage it over time.

  6. Step 6

Allow to air dry, or gently dry with a lint-free cloth.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never wash antique glassware in the dishwasher. The extreme temperatures can crack the glass, and the harsh detergents will cause cloudiness or scratches. Never use a sponge with a scrubbing surface as this will scratch the glass. When buying antique glass, stay away from pieces with cloudy surfaces. This is called glass sickness and cannot be removed. Glass sickness can be caused by the use of extreme temperatures and harsh soap. It is also often seen on vases where mineral rich water was allowed to sit for long periods. Eventually, the minerals eat away at the surface, causing cloudy discoloration.
