How to Copy a DVR to a PC

Digital Video Recorders have become popular home entertainment devices over the past decade. A DVR is a stand-alone set-top box that lets you record television shows and movies for later playback. Recently, DVR manufacturers have enabled DVRs to be networked with other computers and peripheries in your home. The TiVo DVR allows you to buy a wireless adapter for the DVR in order to network the device with your personal computer. By using the TiVo Desktop software application with the wireless adapter, you can copy media files from your DVR to your PC.

  1. Enabling Your TiVo DVR for Wireless Communications

      Purchase the TiVo DVR wireless adapter and plug it in to the USB port on the back of the TiVo DVR.

      Select the TiVo button on your console and choose the "Set Up Network" menu button.

      Follow the on-screen dialogue and choose the wireless network name displayed that correlates to your home network.

      Exit the "Network Setup Program" after configuration of network settings is complete.

    Transferring Media from DVR to PC

      Download and install the "TiVo Desktop" software from the URL listed in Resources.

      Open the "TiVo Desktop" software program by double clicking the icon on your computer's desktop.

      Choose the "Pick Recordings to Transfer" menu option and you will see the "Now Playing List" from your TiVo DVR in the TiVo desktop.

      Select the box that is beside the show (s) you desire to transfer to your computer and select the "Start Transfer" menu button. The shows will now be transferred from your TiVo DVR to your computer.

      Exit the TiVo Desktop program on your computer after the file transfer from the TiVo DVR is complete.
