How to Change the Color of Menus and Dialog Boxes

Changing the colors of the menus and dialog boxes is one way to customize your desktop to suit your personal preferences and needs.

These instructions are for Windows 98. Instructions for other operating systems or versions may vary.

Things You'll Need:

  • Microsoft Windows
  1. Step 1

    Click on the Start menu button. Then click on Settings and then on Control Panel.

  2. Step 2

    Double-click on the Display icon or test link. This will open a window named Display Properties.

  3. Step 3

    Click on Appearance. You will see a window showing the current color menu color scheme that you are using.

  4. Step 4

    Click on the Item box and select Menu.

  5. Step 5

    Click on the box labeled Scheme to view the color schemes that are available to you. Clicking on each will allow you to preview the color before you make your final selection.

  6. Step 6

    Click OK to change your settings.

  7. Step 7

    Click Cancel if you decide to maintain your current settings.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can return and change your color schemes as often as you like. Windows Standard (the gray and navy color scheme) is the default setting for Windows software.
