How to Check System Uptime

Checking the system uptime in Windows helps administrators evaluate any kind of unexpected reboots on a server. It also helps with analysis of server reliability. Finding the system uptime of a Windows XP, 2003 and 2008 server is accomplished through the command prompt console. There are two ways to check the system uptime, each needing only a command line and a single entry.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows "Start" menu and select "Run." Type "cmd" into the text box and press the "Enter" key.

    • 2

Type "systeminfo" into the command prompt and press "Enter." This may take several minutes to load your system configuration.

    • 3

Scroll down to the line labeled "System Boot Time." This is the date the computer was last booted. The system uptime is the difference between the current date and the boot time.

    • 4

Type "net statistics <workstation or server>" into the command prompt. Replace "<workstation or server>" with the type of computer on which the command is being run. For instance, if you're on a laptop or home computer, type "net statistics workstation." If you are on a server machine, type "net statistics server."

    • 5

Scroll to the first output line labeled "Statistics Since." This shows the date of the last boot and allows you to evaluate the total uptime of the computer.
