How to Use Test Tubes

Test tubes are a key part of many science projects. They allow you to hold potentially hazardous and irritating chemicals at a safe distance. Furthermore, they're also resistant to high temperatures, allowing you to heat chemicals inside them without spilling or coming into contact with the chemicals. Test tubes' long, deep bodies allow you to keep away from most of the fumes chemicals can emit as well. Using test tubes requires care; because they are made of glass, they can break and hurt users.

Things You'll Need

• Test tube tongs
• Test tube holders
• Goggles
• Gloves

Instructions

1. Use tongs to grab your test tubes at the center. Wrap the tongs around the center, and hold firmly but not too tightly.

2. Keep the test tube angled away from you at all times, in case of any splashing.

3. When warming the test tube, hold it over the flame at an angle, moving it back and forth gently.

4. Never smell anything inside a test tube directly or look inside a test tube. Waft the air or fumes emitted from the test tube away from you.

5. When not using a test tube, place it upright in the test tube holder. This will help prevent spillage or accidents.

Tips & Warnings

• If in a lab, in general, it is best practice to wear gloves and goggles. These will keep you safe in case of accidents.
