How to Find a CD Key

A CD key, also referred to as a product key, is a special number that has been assigned to software such as an operating system or computer game. This number is unique to the CD it comes with and cannot be used with any other CDs. Therefore, if you were to illegally copy the CD and try to use the same key with the copy, it would not work. The CD key is entered during the installation process. It can be located on the front, back or inside of the jewel case on the back of the manual. Here, we will locate the CD key on a game, "The Sims 2."

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the jewel case with the game in it. Verify that the actual CD itself and the case are a match.

    • 2

Insert the CD into your CD-ROM drive if you have not already done so. Follow the prompts on the screen. Keep the jewel case open.

    • 3
