How to Care for a Rheo Plant
Also known as Moses-in-a-boat and oyster plant, this native of Mexico and the West Indies is a tender perennial that's grown as an annual outside of growing zones 9 through 11. It is a succulent plant, meaning it retains water and can grow in arid conditions. A relatively low-growing plant reaching heights of up to 12 inches, Rheo plants make excellent ground cover or house plants. They bloom year round with tiny, white flowers cradled in purple bracts, and beautiful green, purplish or variegated leaves. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Water infrequently but deeply once or twice a week. Over watering can lead to root rot or foliage disease that can kill the plant. It is better to let the soil dry out in between watering. Rheo plants do not grow well in areas with heavy rainfall.
-
2
Place the plant in partial to full shade. This plant tolerates warm, arid conditions, but thrives in shade. If necessary, grow the plant in a container so you can move it around, as needed.

3
Prune only if the plant is becoming scraggly looking. Only cut off the leaves that do not look good. Prune anytime of the year, except in winter. Rheo plants do not need to be fertilized to thrive.

Finally, consider the temperatures of your area. These plants like warm conditions. If exposed to temperatures below 20 degrees F, they will die. If necessary, grow as a houseplant, or keep it in a container outside from spring through the fall, then bring it in during the winter months. Move outdoors in the spring after all danger of frost as passed.
