How to Back Up Your Internet Explorer 8 Favorites

As you browse the Internet you come across websites that you would like to visit again. If you find these sites through other sites or Google searches it may not always be possible to remember how you found them. Bookmarking lets you easily get back to them at any time. Internet Explorer 8 refers to bookmarks as favorites. Exporting your favorites from Internet Explorer 8 lets you keep a backup copy or move them to another browser.

        Open Internet Explorer using the "Start" button or a shortcut. Click the "Favorites" button to open its menu. Click the "Add to Favorites" arrow and select the "Import and Export" option.

        Click the "Export to a file" option and click "Next." Click the "Favorites" option and click "Next" to continue the wizard. Choose the folder containing the bookmarks you want to export, or select the main Favorites folder to export them all.

        Change the name and location of the export file if desired, otherwise click "Next" to export the "bookmark.htm" file to your Documents folder. Click "Export" to finish the process. Save the resulting file as a backup or use it to import your bookmarks in another browser.

    Tips & Warnings

    • The bookmark.htm file size will be very small.

    • You should backup your bookmarks every 4 months.

    • Failure to backup your favorites can result in the loss of all your favorites.
