QUALITY. It is important to understand that quality is what your looking for in a shingle. You want a shingle that is going to last its full warranty and still look beautiful for years to come.

3 TAB VS DIMENSIONAL. These are the two types of shingles. A 3 tab shingle is a completely flat shingle, it does not have the two-tone, 3D imagine that most people prefer. Usually 3 tabs are cheaper, but they are a complete pain to work with. You have to line the tabs up or they will look terrible. I'm recommending you go with a dimensional shingle.

Dimensional shingles come in several different brands. Some of the big names are Certainteed, Owens Corning, Atlas, and CRC. Owens Corning's Duration shingles seem to be the best. Atlas' Castlebrook 35 year shingles are also excellent. I would STAY AWAY from CRC shingles. They have a horrible reputation. CRC is also known as IKO. A decent 30 to 35 year (warranty) shingle is going anywhere from 75-85 dollars a bundle. This is just for the shingles. Typically a bundle of shingles cover about 33 square feet if you want to give yourself some kind of idea on a price you will be looking at.

Tips & Warnings
Don't just go with the cheapest shingle, you will just end up having to replace them in 10 years.
It pays to shop around, don't get stuck with a shingle you hate!

Wow This is horibad! lol any owens corning and atlas/crc or menards shingle peiod are a complete waste of money. first there warranties say 25-30-35 year. Then 10 years later your replacing your roof saying wtf, I shoulda spent a $100 more on a real shingle. because there about as bad as 3-tabs. actually that's the only thing he did say right. was an architectural shingle is bettr then ANY 3 tab shingle. get Gaf/Elk -timberline HD or Malarky Legacy. otherwise your a dumbass. and we all laugh at you when your replacing your roof 5-10 years later not being covered by warranty. or just go with a metal roof.
