How to Make a Tea Cozy

How to Make a Tea Cozy thumbnail
A cozy for your pot keeps your tea nice and hot.

A tea cozy is a cover for your teapot that serves two functions: it keeps the pot -- and, more importantly, the tea -- hot while you're using it, and acts as a decorative dust cover when you're not. Traditional tea cozies are knitted and resemble winter caps, but you can make a quick tea cozy with just a sewing machine.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 12-by-12-inch pieces of cloth (or enough to cover your teapot)
  • Matching thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Decorations (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the approximate outline of the tea cozy on the material; trace it if you have to. Leave a lot of room on the side or top for the handle as well as a bulge for the spout.

    • 2

Cut each piece of material 2 to 4 inches away from the teapot outline in order to leave room for sewing and hemming.

    • 3

Hem the bottom of the material to make a nice, clean edge flush with the bottom of the teapot.

    • 4

Place the material with the right sides facing together (inside out). Sew along the outer edges of the material, leaving room for the spout and handle as appropriate for your pot. Do not sew the bottom of the material together!

    • 5

Turn the tea cozy inside out, and decorate it as you like.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use pieces of pieces of cloth that are approximately 2 to 4 inches taller and wider than your teapot.

  • Because tea cozies are meant to keep the pot warm, an insulating material like felt or wool is the best choice.
