Always wanted to know how they make those intricate looking clay canes. Try this easy cane that is great for bug wings.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 different color of polymer Clay (Your Choice)
  • Pasta machine or way to flatten polymer clay
  1. Step 1

    Polymer clay plug

    Condition the Polymer Clay about a ½ block of color A

    Make a cylinder that is about 1 ½ inches long and 1 inch in diameter. Set this aside for now.

  2. Step 2

    Condition the polymer clay about a ½ block of color B. Run color B though the pasta machine on the thickest setting of the pasta machine.

  3. Step 3
    Trim the polymer clay

    Using a tissue blade trim polymer clay sheet (color B) to the width of polymer clay cylinder (Color A)

  4. Step 4

    Wrap Color B around Color A and blend the seam.

  5. Step 5
    First cutting

    Reduce the cane by rolling it to 6 inches long and cut in half (2 snakes)

  6. Step 6
    2nd cutting
     
    2nd cutting

    Reduce each half again to 6 inches long and cut in half again (4 snakes)

  7. Step 7
    3rd cutting
     
    3rd cutting

    Reduce each of the 4 snakes again and cut in half again (8 snakes)

  8. Step 8
    Stack the Cane

    Stack the snakes together be sure that there are no air pockets in the middle of the new cane. Trim the other end where the ends may be different lengths. The uneven ends that were cut off are now scrap clay. At this point it may be a good idea to let the new cane rest before going on with the next steps.

  9. Step 9
    Restacked cane
     
    Restacked cane

    Reduce the new cane to 6 inches long and cut in half and cut those halves in half and re-stack. Reduce again until the desires size for your project.

Tips & Warnings
  • If clay is too soft let it rest between steps
  • Use contrasting color for best effect
