Laid off workers who need to file for Ohio unemployment benefits can do so either online or over the phone. The online application to claim unemployment checks is easy to use, even if you're not too computer-savvy. The key to getting Ohio unemployment insurance quickly is filing the application as soon as the job loss occurs. Read on to get started.

  1. Step 1

    Immediately upon losing your job, in Ohio, begin the application process for Ohio unemployment benefits.

  2. Step 2

    Before you can file for unemployment insurance in Ohio you must register and obtain a PIN number through the JFS (Department of Job and Family Services). To do this, go the JFS website and click "Create New Account" at the bottom of the page. You can find a link in the Resources Section below.

  3. Step 3

    Set up your account on the Claimant Information page by providing your name and social security number. Click next.

  4. Step 4

    Once you have obtained your PIN number you can begin to file a new claim for Ohio unemployment insurance online.

  5. Step 5

    Fill out the application completely and honestly providing all necessary information. Refer to your W-2 form for information about your previous employer.

  6. Step 6

    Complete the online application for unemployment compensation within 24 hours of when the application was started. If you can not complete the claim in one sitting, be sure to finish it within one day of starting the application or all information will be lost from Ohio's JFS system.

  7. Step 7

    Once your application for Ohio unemployment benefits is finished be sure to get a confirmation number. Online applications do not begin being processed until a confirmation number is issued.

  8. Step 8

    Look for further information and correspondence from Ohio's unemployment office in your mail or email.

  9. Step 9

    Wait up to four weeks to receive your first unemployment insurance check from the state of Ohio. If you do not receive your benefits in the mail contact the Department of Job and Family services by phone at 1-877-644-6562

  10. Step 10

    You can continue to collect Ohio unemployment benefits as long as you stay qualified. In order to get compensation checks you must request them weekly through the JFS website.To remain eligible, you must actively be seeking work and you are required to report any monetary earnings. You can report wages by logging into your ODJFS account using the password you created previously.
