Throw a Great Summer Block Party

Summer block parties a good way to get the whole neighborhood together, but they do take time to plan or organize. Set a schedule well in advance, and get as many neighbors as possible involved in the planning process.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold a planning party in the spring. Invite neighbors who want to help organize the event and are willing to work on its various elements. Pick a location for the party and check with the city about any permissions you may need. Some cities require a block party permit if any part of the party involves closing off a street.

    • 2

Settle on a date at least six weeks in advance. This gives you time to organize committees, settle on food and entertainment options, and promote the event. This will also give you time to get a permit. It may also give you a chance to attach the party to some other event, like a local garage sale or holiday celebration.

    • 3

Have casual meetings every other week to ensure each committee is keeping up with its duties. You should have different committees handling the food, entertainment and activities, and publicity. The activities planners should plan on games for children.

    • 4

Send invitations at least a month before the party date. Invite everyone in the immediate neighborhood, but be prepared for neighbors who do not want to participate. Do not set up the party so it will be an inconvenience for them. If you do, your "great" party could end up with a visit from the police.

    • 5

Be prepared for rain with tarps or a cloth gazebo. Depending on the size of the event, you may be able to serve food and play table games underneath a large tarp. This tarp may also need a city or neighborhood permit. A tarp may be used anyway as an area of shade for people who need to get out of the sun.
