Get Rid of Head Lice Naturally with Mayonnaise

Get rid of head lice naturally with mayonnaise. Head-louse infestation is extremely common in children. While a nuisance, unlike human body lice, head lice do not carry infectious diseases. Head lice, or nits, is caused by the colonization of the hair and skin by the parasitic head louse. Head lice feed on human blood, and itching from louse bites is a common symptom. Treatment typically includes application of topical insecticides, however, there are more natural remedies for those allergic or uncomfortable with insecticides.

First you'll need to get rid of the lice. One popular method is to apply mayonnaise to the hair. Scoop a handful or two and completely cover the scalp. Be sure to fully cover the area around the ears, temples and the neck.

  2. Step 2

Next cover the head with a shower cap and wait for at least two hours before removing.

  3. Step 3

Now you will need to remove any loose eggs. Start by shampooing the mayonnaise out of the hair. You may need to re-shampoo the hair a few times ti completely remove all of it. Now rinse first with vinegar and then with hot water.

Carefully comb the hair with a nit comb, a stainless steel comb with micro-grooved teeth which removes lice and nits safely. Be sure to check thoroughly for any remaining nits with a bright light.

  5. Step 5

After you have finished combing let hair dry throughly. Now check for nits again, with a bright light. It is easier to see them when the hair is dry so you may very well see some that you previously missed. Look at small sections at a time, especially the edges of the scalp and around the ears. If any nits remain you'll see them attached to the hair and above the scalp. If you find more repeat the vinegar wash again to loosen the glue that holds he nits on the hair follicle and re-comb.

Tips & Warnings
  • Once you get rid of lice you need to be vigilant to avoid repeat infestations refrain from sharing things like hats, hair brushes, pillows and blankets.
