Write a resume that showcases your skills instead of your lack of experience.

Whether you're a high school student who wants to make extra cash, a recent college grad or a stay-at-home mom about to enter the workforce for the first time, having a resume that highlights all that you can do is essential. You don't need years of work experience to create an impressive resume. Focus on what you can do and the life experience you already have to get yourself interviews.

Instructions

    • 1

Paid work experience isn't all you need to fill up a resume. Volunteer work, participation in a community organization or college club, religious organization or college ROTC program can all highlight your dedication, work ethic and leadership ability. If you're a high school student, your summers mowing lawns or babysitting the neighbors' kids all demonstrate your ability to organize tasks and level of responsibility.

    • 2

Include any awards, qualifications and recognitions you have received. Students with impressive grades should highlight these accomplishments indicating an excellent work ethic and smarts. List your achievement on the honor roll, dean's list and your high GPA under your education section.

    • 3

Lead your resume with your education, especially if you are a recent grad. You may also include information about certifications and licenses you have. If you haven't graduated yet, include your expected date of graduation. Include information about your major or any relevant coursework to show an employer that you have knowledge in a specific area of study.

    • 4

Provide a section that highlights special skills you might have such as your ability to trouble shoot computer issues or your expertise in designing websites.

    • 5

Use professional language in your resume. Don't use any slang. The resume should be clear, concise and easy to read. Use a professional font such as Arial or Times New Roman. Use plain, sturdy computer paper.

Tips & Warnings

  • Have someone else read and proofread your resume before you send it to employers.

  • Don't lie on your resume; it's best to be honest about your work experience.
