Godparents are chosen to help a child's parents to raise him or her in the Catholic faith. A Godparent is expected to be an active participant in the Godchild's life. It is not just a random honor, it is a huge compliment about the way you practice your faith.

Here are some things to consider when becoming a baby's Godparent.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make sure you have the time to devote yourself to the child's life as a Christian.

  2. Step 2

Pray about your decision. Ask for God's guidance. Be honest with yourself about whether or not you are willing to put forth the necessary effort.

  3. Step 3

Attend the Baptism preparation class given at the Catholic Church. Do not miss this.

  4. Step 4

Educate yourself about what it means to be baptized.

  5. Step 5

Clear your calendar completely on the day of the Baptism ceremony. You will want all of your energy and attention focused on this special day.

  6. Step 6

Arrive early. Be completely available and involved.

  7. Step 7

Toast your new Godchild at the gathering that is sure to follow.

  8. Step 8

Give your Godchild a gift. A Baby's First Bible or a small cross would be ideal gifts. You can even have these blessed by a priest prior to the day of the Baptism. A gift is not required, but will make the day a bit more special.

  9. Step 9

Remember your Godchild's birthday and other special days. A great gesture would be to send your Godchild a gift or card on the anniversary of their baptism. Let them know that this day was truly special to you.

  10. Step 10

Share your faith freely with your Godchild throughout his life.
