This article will give you a few basics on having a safe and enjoyable time out on the water. Water safety is extremely important and unfortunately overlooked often.

  1. Step 1

    Three of the most common causes of drowning are:
    1. Poor swimming skills
    2. Abuse of alcohol
    3. Not wearing a life jacket

  2. Step 2

    Whenever out boating on a lake, river, or ocean where a life jacket! A lot of people think it can be "uncool" to wear one but it can save your life and that's a lot more important than looking cool.

  3. Step 3

    Be extremely cautious if you choose to drink alcohol and don't over do it. Many, many drowning deaths are attributed to alcohol.

  4. Step 4

    Do not over estimate your swimming abilities. Even very strong swimmers have made this mistake and drowned. Learn to swim well and make sure your children learn also.

  5. Step 5

    Take a CPR/ First Aid class. If an accident does happen, these skills can save lives.
