Step 1
Decide what temperature you'll be using the sleeping bag in.
Sleeping bags are rated with degrees (typically in Fahrenheit) where you'll survive the night but won't be totally comfortable. However, buying a sleeping bag that is rated too low may keep you warm and hot during the summer and buying a sleeping bag that's rated too high can keep you cold during winter nights. So careful consideration and planning on what season and where you'll be using the sleeping bag can save you a lot of trouble. -
Step 2
Consider your size when looking to buy a sleeping bag.
Do you need a short sleeping bag , regular size or a longer sleeping bag for taller people? There are also options available for kids. -
Step 3
Look at buying either a synthetic or a down sleeping bag depending on your use case.
Down sleeping bags are extremely light, packable, and have a longer life than synthetic sleeping bags. However, they are more expensive, more difficult to clean and if they get wet can be ruined. You have a great warmth to weight ratio which is useful for backpackers.
Synthetic bags are cheaper and easier to clean. However they are not very packable if you are worried about space and can be heavier which may be issues for backpackers, but great for casual campers. -
Step 4
Look for reviews of sleeping bags from popular websites like backpackers magazine or outdoors magazine.
