How to Make Curtain Rods

These instructions result in a curtain rod that hangs against the window. This can form a better thermal seal around the window than traditional curtain rods which hold the curtain away from the window.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • copper water pipe
  • hooks
  • ribbon or cord
  • decorative ends
  • glue
  • hacksaw
  1. Step 1

Measure the width of the window opening.

  2. Step 2

Cut your water pipe just a little longer than the width of the window opening.

  3. Step 3

Glue some kind of decorative end onto the pipe curtain rod. You can use just about anything that's larger than the width of the rod. Ideal objects have a part that can be inserted into the curtain rod like a door handle, or a shaker peg.

  4. Step 4

Mount hooks to the top of the window frame. If there is no wooden frame on the window, use screws with expanding wall anchors through the drywall. To keep it low key and inexpensive, use cup hooks or eyes. If you want to you can use something fancier.

  5. Step 5

Tie the ribbon or cord into two identical loops. Use cord for heavier curtains.

  6. Step 6

Put the ribbon or cord loops around the ends of the curtain rods, and hook the ribbons or cords over the hooks above the window.
