A Master Gardener is an experienced gardener who loves gardening and wants to learn everything that gardening encompasses including weeds and weed control, good and bad insects, propagation of plants, identification of plants and plant diseases, and even landscaping.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

To become a Master Gardener in Delaware, you must complete an application for the state’s Master Gardener Program. The application will ask you to list your gardening, work, and volunteer experiences. The application also includes space to list horticultural and non-horticultural training (like public speaker) and gardening affiliations. Check the links under Resources (below) for the application to your county.

  2. Step 2

After your application has been accepted, you can take the 16-week program of twice weekly training that includes lectures, workshops, and problem-solving sessions. Training comes through many sources including the Cooperative Extensions of each county and experts from the University of Delaware or Delaware State University.

  3. Step 3

You must perform a minimum 45 hours of volunteer service in the first year after training completes. Volunteer service will include some time answering the phone for your county extension office and can include other volunteer services like conducting lectures or demonstrating gardening techniques for your local community.
