How to String a Violin Bow

A violin bow is strung with horsehair that when stroked against the strings of the violin instrument creates an instantly distinguishable sound. Violins are played in some of the most mournful, heart-wrenching and romantic of melodies. However, for a violin to function properly, the bow must be properly strung.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a length of horsehair that corresponds with your violin bow.

    • 2

Use thin thread to tie a knot in one end of the horsehair to hold the strands together.

    • 3

Insert the end of the knotted horsehair into a flame to expand the hair behind the knot to make the knot stronger.

    • 4

Place the knotted end of the hair into the mortise found at the head of the bow. Fasten the hair to the mortise by inserting the wooden plug.

    • 5

Pull the frog all the way forward.

    • 6

Comb and arrange the hair straightly and evenly, then tie the other end of the hair into a knot with thin thread.

    • 7

Slide the ferrule over the hair.

    • 8

Place the remaining end of the hair into the mortise of the frog end of the stick, and fasten the hair to it by inserting the other wooden plug.

    • 9

Push in the pearl slide and slide the ferrule over the hair again.

    • 10

Insert the wooden wedge into the ferrule to hold the secure the hair completely.

    • 11

Apply powdered rosin to the horsehair liberally, coating it well for grip.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may cut the horsehair if necessary before stringing if you cannot find the correct size of horsehair for your bow.

  • Always apply rosin to the horsehair of your bow before attempting to play it against violin strings.

I have been wanting to do this, but there isn't quite enough information here. How do I disassemble the bow and remove the old hair? You really need pictures on this one.
