How to Open MSG Files

MSG files are simply message files. Microsoft Windows created the file type for their specific mailing programs, such as Outlook or Outlook Express. If you save your email messages from a Windows mail program, you can open and view the content in a separate application. This is important if you wish to save your messages but are in the process of uninstalling the Outlook email program. Encryptomatic MsgViewer Pro ($69.99 as of July 2009) and Viewer for MS Outlook Messages ($20 as of July 2009) can open MSG files as well as EML files.

Encryptomatic MsgViewer Pro

1. Open the MsgViewer application. Upon installation, the program adds a shortcut to the PC desktop. (See Resources below for download link.)

2. Click the "Files" tab on the left side. Select the folder with the MSG or EML files. A list of mail messages will appear as a list at the top.

3. Select the mail message to open. The entire email will display under the list. Attachments are available on the bottom left.

Viewer for MS Outlook Messages

1. Press the "Open File" button. Select the file folder that contains the MSG files. (See Resources below for download link.)

2. Click the "Files of Type:" arrow. Select "MS Outlook Messages (.msg)." Highlight the file and click "Open."

3. Read the MSG file. Select the tab below the message for "Plain Text" or "HTML."

Tips & Warnings

• You must purchase the full version of the application to avoid limitations; however, demos are available for free to try the program.
