NTFS is a partition format used by versions of Microsoft Windows. It was implemented since Windows NT, and it is the standard for the company's operating system. You cannot read the data on an NTFS partition without a tool called NTFS4DOS. This program allows you to create a boot disk that gives you access to the NTFS partition, similar to booting with a DOS boot disk. The tool is free and only has a few steps for installation and configuration.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

    Installation

  1. Step 1

Download the NTFS4DOS installation tool (see Resources). Save the file to a directory on your computer.

  2. Step 2

Double-click the saved zip file from step 1 and extract the ntfs_h.exe file to the same directory.

  3. Step 3

Double-click ntfs_h.exe to start the installation. This opens the installation wizard to guide you through the process. Click "OK" on the welcome screen.

  4. Step 4

Click "Next" at the license agreement screen. Confirm that you've read the agreement and click "Next."

  5. Step 5

Enter a directory to save the installation files. For this example, use "C:\ntfs4dos." Click the "Next" button.

  6. Step 6

Click the "Install" button. When the program completes installation, click "Finish."

  7. Configuration

  8. Step 1

Insert a blank floppy disk into the computer. Click the Windows "Start" button, select "Programs," and then choose "Avira NTFS4DOS." From the menu, choose "Create NTFS capable boot floppy."

  9. Step 2

Select the floppy disk drive letter and choose the language to use. Click the "Next" button and the configuration wizard opens.

  10. Step 3

Select "Create RAM Drive" from the options. Enter the size of the RAM drive. For this example, leave the default setup by the configuration wizard.

  11. Step 4

Select "Create diskette." This installs the necessary files onto the floppy disk.

  12. Step 5

Leave the floppy in the computer and reboot the machine. The computer boots from the floppy, and the NTFS partition is available through DOS commands.
