File Transport Protocol (FTP) sites are a convenient way to share files across a network and the Internet. FTP is offered by the Windows server software from Microsoft. FTP sites are configured through the Windows Internet Information Services (IIS) console application that comes with your server software. There are several steps to create and configure an FTP site for your organization.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

    Installation

  1. Step 1

Click the Windows "Start" button and select "Settings." Click the "Control Panel" link. In Control Panel, double-click "Add/Remove Programs." This opens a window with a list of installed applications.

  2. Step 2

Click the "Add/Remove Windows Components" tab. Click the "Internet Information Services" link and click "Details" to expand the detailed list of components. Make sure "File Transfer Protocol" is checked.

  3. Step 3

Click the "Next" button. At this point, IIS is installed on the machine. Click the "Finish" button when the installation is completed.

  4. Configure a New FTP Site

  5. Step 1

Click the Windows "Start" button and select "Settings." Click the "Control Panel" link. In Control Panel, double-click "Administrative Tools." Double-click "Internet Information Services."

  6. Step 2

Right-click the "Default FTP Site" icon on the left of the screen and select "New FTP Site." This opens a window for the FTP creation wizard.

  7. Step 3

Enter a description for the site. For instance, if this FTP site is for an internal customer service department, type "Customer Service" and click the "Next" button.

  8. Step 4

Select an IP address for the service. This can be "All Unassigned," which means all requests for FTP service will go to this server, or you can select a single IP, which means only requests to that IP address will open the FTP service. Click the "Next" button.

  9. Step 5

Enter a local directory for the FTP files. For instance, enter "C:\custserv" to store the files used by the FTP site. Click the "Next" button.

  10. Step 6

Set permissions for users. Two check boxes are presented---read and write. "Read" access only allows users to read and download files. "Write" access allows users to upload and change files on the server. For most FTP configurations, read access is the only permission granted. Click the "Next" button.

  11. Step 7

Click the "Finish" button to close the window and create the newly configured FTP site on the server.
