How to Vectorize in Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop does any number a graphics tasks well, but one that it does not do so well is vector graphics. It has nothing like the advanced vector graphics features you would find in a dedicated vector graphics package like CorelDraw. However, it is possible to create vector graphics in Photoshop, with a bit of effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Photoshop. Select "File" and then "Open." Browse to the image you want to convert to a vector and open it. Go to the "Layer' panel and "Duplicate" this layer. Reduce its "Opacity" to 50 percent. Then select the background layer.

    • 2

Select the "Pen" tool from the toolbar and make sure that in the options at the top the "Shape Layers" option is on.

    • 3

Use the "Pen" tool to create an outline around the object in the image you want to vectorize. Then select the "Convert Point" tool to adjust the points, selecting the "Tangent" bars on either side to change the angle of curves.

    • 4

Create a new layer. Change the "Foreground" color. Use the "Pen" tool to outline subsection of the shape you outlined in step 3. For example, if you outlined the overall shape of a house in step 3, you might outline the door in this step. Again, use the "Convert Point" tool to make fine adjustments.

    • 5

Continue this process of outlining subsections of the overall shape. It is best to use as few colors as possible in this process. Create lines around the individual parts by selecting "Blending Options" and clicking "Stroke." When you are finished, save your work.
