How to Easily Make Stained Glass Patterns

Simple stained glass patterns can be used for stained glass projects, sun-catchers, gel stain paintings on glass and coloring pages. Simple designs work well for small pieces of glass work. The simple line drawings are an easier design to use when teaching a beginner stained glass class. Design an entire file of easy to make stained glass patterns for future use with any type of the colorful projects.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Look for pictures that you would like to use in your stained glass designs. Line drawings and coloring book pages are simple to incorporate into a design. Squares, rectangles, diamonds and circles are elegant and simple shapes to incorporate into a design.

  2. Step 2

    Sketch the outline of your design on to white art paper. Use a ruler to keep the drawn outline line form even. Continue by drawing in the simple image or shape for the design.

  3. Step 3

    Make three photocopies of the pattern design you have drawn. Two copies must be must be full size project patterns, one a color key and the second the line drawing copy.

  4. Step 4

    Chose colors that you want to use and color in the second copy, or color key, of the line drawing with colored pencils.

  5. Step 5

    Use a black marker to fill in the entire bold outline of the color code key. This is the flux and solder lines between glass segments in a design.

  6. Step 6

    Store the two full size patterns in a file folder or manila envelope. Attach the smaller photocopy to the outside of the folder to identify which pattern is contained inside.

  7. Step 7

    Cut the black and white full size line drawing into the small shaped segments for the glass cutting patterns when ready to make the project.
