Applying or Social Security Disability benefits can be a long and grueling process. But don't lose hope, billions of dollars are paid out each year to disabled individuals . The following steps will advise you step by step on how to apply for disability benefits through the Social Security Administration.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Review the SSA's Disability Policy

To start, you may want to read up on the Social Security Administrations policy on what constitutes a disability and other program details regarding SSA's disability program. You can read such details by logging on to hhtp//.ssa.gov (See resources section below).

  2. Step 2

    Prepare Documents and Paperwork

To apply for disability benefits you will need to have all of your personal information such as your medical history, doctors names , dates of hospital visits etc. You will also need a valid state ID or drivers license, birth certificate , and Social Security card.

Note: Before you apply it is important to know that most disability applicants are denied on their first try. Don't let this discourage you, re-apply a second or third time if necessary.

  3. Step 3

    Apply Online

Applying online is the most convenient and hassle free way to apply for disability benefits. Log on to www.ssa.gov/disability, access the disability application , and fill in all required information.

The SSA will contact you to set up an interview to further assess the nature of your disability.

  4. Step 4

    Apply In Person

Apply for disability in person by going down to your local Social Security office and requesting the proper application form(s). After you fill out your application and turn it in, a interview for a later date will be set.

  5. Step 5

    Apply Over the Phone

To apply for disability benefits over the phone, simply contact the Social Security Administration by calling 1-800-325-0778. The operator will schedule an appointment for you to apply over the phone.

  6. Step 6

    Consider a Disability Lawyer

If you are denied, try hiring a disability lawyer. Disability lawyers specialize in getting people's disability claims approved. The only downside to hiring a lawyer is the costs and fees you will accrue.
