This article will teach you some tips in styling and managing your thinning hair.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Blow dryer
  • Round brush
  • Hair mousse
  • Hair clips
  • Sharp scissors
  1. Step 1

THE HAIR CUT: Long hair pulls on the scalp, may contribute to more hair loss, as well as make it more difficult to achieve volume and lift in the areas where scalp is starting to show. I recommend a shorter hair style for volume and lift to provide a faux fullness to hide thinning hair. Alter a short cut with longer bangs or shorter bangs, but always short around the crown. Have hair trimmed every 5-6 weeks if possible. A good clean cut requires less product and fuss to manage. The right product will aide in getting great volume and lift for thinning hair.

  2. Step 2

WASHING YOUR HAIR: Some women do not wash their hair everyday, I did not used to. However, when your hair starts to thin, you need all the help you can get fluffing it up, so always wash your hair before styling it. Use a gentle and mild good quality shampoo. Rinse with a very small amount of conditioner, too much will weigh your hair down.

  3. Step 3

COLORING YOUR HAIR: I do recommend you color your hair. When hair thins generally it also becomes somewhat dull. Dyeing your hair with quality hair dye can add some luster and body. Frosting, streaking, or highlighting your hair can add some interest and dramatic illusion that along with volume can help you appear to have a full head of hair. Jane Fonda does this very well with a short frosted look plumped up with lots of volume.

  4. Step 4

PRE-BLOW DRY PRODUCT: I prefer a nice light mousse carefully placed before I blow dry. I find the gels and other products are far to heavy and sticky. I use a volume mousse right at the edge of my bangs and across the crown of my head. I then use fingertips to gently pat in the mousse. I do not rub so much as to cause frizz in the hair while applying. When blow drying this mousse will aid in producing volume when combined with a round brush and carefully angled blow dryer.

  5. Step 5

BLOW DRYING: As noted above, before drying use a mousse product as indicated in step 4 above. Then comb hair free of tangles. Pull bang area forward, leave go for now. Take a round brush and grip crown area hair with the brush. Blow dry hair curled into the round brush angled so hot air hits the round brush area only. Repeat this all over crown area until you can visibly begin to see a lift and volume appear. Now return to bang area and blow dry the bangs straight forward and straight to the sides. Use the brush to pull the hair. For sides of hair grab the hair in the round brush and blow dry pulling the hair out as your dry. Do not forget the back of your hair. Use your round brush to grab hair at the back of the head and pull the hair through the brush as you dry.

  6. Step 6

FINGER STYLING: After your hair is dry, style your hair with your fingers by running your fingers through your hair to shape pieces where you like. Finger tease your scalp hair by gently rubbing your finger tips on your scalp as if you were itching. Push the hair upwards from the scalp to create even more volume.

  7. Step 7

FINISHING SPRAY: You may wish to use a very light weight hair spray to hold in place your style. Be cautious to use too much or a spray that is too thick or it will only weigh your hair down. After spraying a small amount of light spray you can finger tease your scalp a little more. Go enjoy your beautiful hair!

  8. Step 8

YOUR EYEBROWS: Do not under estimate the power of great eyebrows to draw attention off of your scalp and onto your eyes. Nothing like a great pair of well groomed eyebrows draws attention. Consider the great Hollywood starts of yesteryear such as Greta Garbo and Elizabeth Taylor. Consider the condition, color, and style of your eyebrows as you do your hair. See the article on 'How to regrow your eyebrows' noted below. The article was inspired by over pluckers, but the techniques apply to all eyebrows. Great reading if your eyebrows could use a little work.

Tips & Warnings
  • Experiment with different cuts and colors and steaks of color.
  • Experiment using different light weight hair sprays and mousse.
  • Experiment with different round brush styles.
  • Avoid sticky or heavy hair products.
  • Eat well balanced meals, get plenty of exercise and rest == healthy hair needs a healthy lifestyle.

on 9/24/2009 These are all excellent pointers for styling and caring for thinning hair. I agree that long hair tends to pull on the root, causing hair to come out. Thinning hair results. Good work here - as always!. 5*****
