Things You'll Need:
- Computer
- Internet
-
Step 1
Check out garage sales for tents, sleeping bags, air mattresses, pot and pans, and more. Garage sales usually have a variety of camping equipment for sale if you look in the right places. Often times, people will sell camping gear in lots and allow you to purchase supplies together for one low price. Ask a seller if they'd take a certain amount for all the camping gear they want to sell.
-
Step 2
Shop online at discount camping stores. Check out sites like BackcountryOutlet.com or SportwearEquipment.com for cheap camping gear. Sometimes Dicks Sporting Goods has great sales online as well. And, if you ever can't find anything at these places, there is always eBay for purchasing cheap camping equipment. If you purchase more than one item from the same seller on eBay, they'll often give you free or discount shipping prices. See resource list below for links to shopping online.
-
Step 3
Check out discount ‘everything' catalogs such as ABC Distributing and LTD. Many of these places offer camping gear at a fraction of the cost because they cut out the middle man. The Lakeside Collection also offers cheap prices on outdoor and camping gear. See resource list for links to catalogs online.
-
Step 4
Put up an ad at work or in the newspaper. Let people know that you're looking for camping gear. You'd be surprise at how many people are wanting to get rid of things like that and aren't sure what to do with it. Offer a price that's negotiable for the camping gear and work from there.
-
Step 5
Dollar Stores and Family Dollar actually carry some camping gear as well. Family Dollar is your best bet for a tent or sleeping bag, but you can get pots, pans, lanterns and more at the Dollar Store. Since they can afford to sell items for cheap, you'll get a good price on camping gear. Check for the closest Dollar Store near you or get online. See list of resources below for links.

on 8/18/2009 Don't forget about Steep and Cheap. It's a website where one super-discounted item is listed at a time between 50%-80% off. Awesome deals if you don't mind waiting for the item you need. And if you don't want to wait, check out http://www.sacalerts.com to get text message or email alerts when the gear you want goes on sale.
