Butterfly costumes are fun for all ages, from infants to adults. This eHow article shows how to make butterfly costumes easily without sewing, and lets you choose a quick version or a more hands-on creative version that even children can help with.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Create antennae for butterfly costumes. Wire two pipe cleaners to a thin headband that’s the same color as your hair. Make the pipe cleaners stick up in the air as insect antennae do. The pipe cleaners can be dark brown or black, unless you want more of a “magical” butterfly. For that, you can use shimmery, metallic or bright colors for your butterfly costume’s antennae.

  2. Step 2

Create the body for butterfly costumes. In either black or dark brown, put on a long-sleeved leotard over tights, or a tight long sleeved T-shirt or turtleneck over leggings or tight stretch pants.

  3. Step 3

Create the wings for butterfly costumes. If you’re in a hurry, you can simply purchase fairy wings that are for sale in children’s clothing and dance stores or costume stores. These come in white, pink, yellow and other appropriate colors for butterfly costumes. Fairy wings also come specifically to look like butterfly fairies, also, and you may find wings similar to the image in this article. Put them on over your butterfly body costume. If you want to make your own no-sew butterfly wings, purchase bright yellow felt, the thickest you can find, in the size you need to cut out butterfly wings – you can enlarge and use the image in this article for a pattern, or hand-draw something similar. Cut out the wings. Fold in half and make a slight crease, then re-open and use fabric markers to color the crease the same color as your body (black or dark brown). It can be wider than the actual crease, up to an inch or so wide. Decorate the rest of the wings with fabric glue, sequins, and bright fabric paints. Before donning the top part of your butterfly body, affix the wings to the back with diaper pins, using the pins to attach the wings from the inside so they won’t show on the outside. Attach along the crease.

Tips & Warnings
  • The smaller your homemade felt wings are, the less floppy they will be. You can also double your felt wings and glue them together with fabric glue for sturdier wings for butterfly costumes.
