With our budgets getting smaller we need to find ways to look good for less. This article will teach you how to cut your own hair to extend the life of a salon cut.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Very sharp scissors.
  • Lots of hair clips.
  1. Step 1

WHAT NOT TO CUT: The first step in learning how to cut your own hair to extend the life of a salon cut is to know what not to cut. Do not cut the back of your hair your first time at trying this. Stick to the frontal parts of hair and sides that you can easily reach.

  2. Step 2

SECTION OFF HAIR: The second step to cut your own hair to extend the life of a salon cut is to section off your hair into three basic sections. Bangs, sides of face, crown and back of hair.

  3. Step 3

BANGS: Cutting your own hair to extend the life of a salon cut is easiest done with the smallest easiest to reach section, that is the bangs. Within the area of bangs that you already sectioned off, pick up a very small strand of hair. Snip off only a fraction of an inch, then clip off that newly cut hair piece to the side. Continue to do this throughout the bang area, cutting and clipping. Cut a piece, then clip that piece to the side. You do not want to cut the same piece twice.

  4. Step 4

SIDES OF FACE: The second areas of hair you cut to extend the life of a salon hair cut is the sides of the face. A little more tricky, but not too hard if you go slow and carefully. Brush both sides of your hair directly onto your face. Before you cut, notice what style is there, you will be following the pre-existing style and trimming what is there. You may slither your scissors along the sides of your face to carefully slither trim sides. You may also use the cut and clip method. Compare sides to keep them even. Remember you are trimming only.

  5. Step 5

CROWN AND BACK OF HEAD: The last step to cut your hair yourself to extend the life of a salon cut is to cut the crown area (leave go the back of head until you are more experienced at doing this). For the crown area you are going to again follow the basic steps of cut and clip. You lift up a small piece of hair and cut and clip it aside. Take very small sections at a time. Continue till all hair is newly snipped.

Tips & Warnings
  • To cut your own hair to extend the life of a salon cut you will need patience and practice. Leave go the back of your hair and focus on frontal aspects. Use very sharp scissors and use the "cut and clip" method through out. That is, keep clipping away hair you have already cut so you do not cut any hair twice. Cut only a fraction of an inch. Stay with the style as it is cut and just snip the dead ends and frizzy pieces. Your goal will be to get that good clean just cut look, not style your hair. Later after much practice you may venture to styling your hair with scissors.
  • Be careful with your scissors while you have them near your face and eyes.

on 9/5/2009 This is definitely useful, I'll have to try this. I hate getting my haircut at the salon sometimes because they can be scissor happy! Much rather do it myself. 5*
