1. Choose the right fishing rod and reel for the job. You will want a strong pole and reel that is capable of handling large weights. There are several rod and reel combos made just for cat fishing. Big catfish need big gear.

2. Use a strong fishing line. I suggest using 50 pound test line or higher. You don't want break your line because the fish is to big. This can be very upsetting when you know you have hooked a decent sized catfish.
