Mints are fresh smelling and easy to grow. Commonly known mints are peppermint and spearmint. Lesser known mints include apple mint, ginger mint and pineapple mint. Mints are perfect for the beginning herb gardener and will quickly fill your herb garden. A few plants spread easily and yield plenty of mint for harvest. Mints are perennial, they come back each year without replanting. Mints grow 2 to 3 feet tall.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Where to Plant Mint

Mint grows easily in zones 5 to 9. Transplant mint plants or cuttings from another garden after the last frost date has past. The plants should be 18 inches apart. Mints should be planted in partial shade, but will tolerate full sun. Mints grow best in moderately fertile soil. Overly fertile soil causes mint plants to develop rust spots.

  2. Step 2

    Mint is Invasive

Mint is considered an invasive plant. It spreads quickly. It can take over other plants if not controlled. Place a border 8 inches deep around the growing area to prevent mint from spreading to other areas, or grow in a pot or raised bed.

  3. Step 3

    Pests to Avoid

Aphids, spider mites, mint flea beetles, and cutworms are common pests that like mint.

Tips & Warnings
  • Dried mint makes and excellent herbal tea year round!
