Things You'll Need:
- books
- internet
- paper
- pencils
- workbooks

Step 1
READING
By third grade, a student should read fluently. When reading with your child check to make sure that your child comprehends what they are reading. Ask your child to tell you what the story was about, who was the characters, and what happened in the story. The bookstore sells Reading Comprehension workbooks. Better yet, the dollar store sells workbooks. -
Step 2
READ
Utilize your local library or bookstore. Take your child to the library every week. Allow them to check out at least three or four books a week, magazines, or whatever they are excited about reading. Be an example to your child. Let your child see you reading a book, newspaper, or magazine from time to time. -
Step 3
MATH
By the end of 2nd grade, your child should be able to give "quick" answers to addition and subtraction flash cards. A student entering 3rd grade should know how to calculate multiplication and division. Better yet practice by using flash cards with your child. No need to overwhelm them, start with 4 or 5 flash cards at a time. Once they master 5 cards, add 5 new cards, and continue this routine until your child has memorized the entire flash card deck. -
Step 4
WRITING
Give your child a journal. Allow your child to write in their journals everyday. Where they went today or anything that they choose to write about. Allow your child to see you writing. Have your child help you with everyday writing such ans grocery lists and "things to do" list. -
Step 5
GEOGRAPHY
Your child more that likely has already learned about local areas on the map such as their state and their country. Familiarize your child with a world map or globe.
