Your headshot is vital to your acting success. Here's how to go about finding the best photographer for you!

Instructions

The first step is a reality check. Your headshot is your first shot at success - don't let it be your last shot! Getting the best acting headshot is an INVESTMENT in your career - you MUST be willing to invest. This means MONEY!

It will also take some time and effort. Let's get started.

      Got to this website:
      http://reproductions.com/

Provide a New York zip code. You can use 10001. Enter.

      Go to "The Directory".

You now have a listing of New York City photographers - print it out.

Now come the time and effort part. (The money comes later, don't worry.) You need to go through the list. Go to EVERY link and look at each photographer's headshot portfolio.

If a photographer's work GRABS you, circle the name - if not, cross it off.

NOW, go back through your circled list again. Look for YOU - actually, I mean actors who LOOK like you. Their ethnicity, skin coloring, eyes, hair etc. You want the photographer that makes people like you look their best.

When you find someone who looks like you - note what COLOR they are WEARING. You want to wear colors that look great on camera, compliment your coloring, and really make your eyes pop. See what worked for others and use this knowledge!

Now comes the hardest part...once you have a short list (5 max) of photographers you want to work with, you need to meet them.

Yes, you NEED to meet with each one. A simple 5 minute meeting will do it. This is the first real investment of your time/money - but it will save you from any expensive mistakes.

The relationship between a photographer and an actor will SHOW UP in the photo. You want to work with someone that you feel really comfortable with - even if interviewing someone is not the most comfortable thing for you!

Bring the clothes you plan to wear. Bring any headshots that you have had taken in the past. Ask if they are running any specials - in this economy, it can't hurt to ask.

Now - you are ready to choose the best photographer FOR YOU.

The final step is saving up the money to pay for YOUR photographer. Remember the "investment" speech from step #1.

You can do it! Good luck.
