Step 1
Understanding and comparing plan benefit details can be confusing.
Talk with someone who understands how health insurance works. This could be someone you know that works in the health care industry, a parent with experience, am insurance company customer service representative, or an agent in your local area. I personally believe the best way to compare benefit details and cost is to use an independent agent. They don't normally charge you for their expertise. This is because they are paid commissions by the insurer if you end up purchase the plan through them. It's usually the exact same price to use an agent, as it is if you go directly through the insurance company. -
Step 2
Your health history and current health status may cause the insurer to deny you, or increase your rate.
Do your research first. Make a call to each insurer and ask them what their policy is for underwriting someone that is your age, with your medical history/conditions. An independent agent can be a great resource for helping you decide which insurers will look favorably upon your health status and medical history. This can save you quite a bit of time completing applications for insurance companies who may deny you. -
Step 3
Completing applications can be painstaking.
In some cases you will have to fill out the application forms for the people applying. However, an independent agent in your area might be able to complete the application for you over the phone or in person. Best of all, there's usually no charge to use an agent.
